Abstract:
Blown film extrusion is a process requiring a high level of operator skill. Producing film to geometric specification requires a good understanding of the dependence of bubble dimensions on the interrelationship of process variables. Dimensions include film thickness, bubble diameter, and frost line height. Process variables for controlling these dimensions include screw speed, nip speed, cooling air speed, and bubble air volume. An experienced operator understands that changing any one variable will affect all three dimensions, and understands the change that will result. A highly realistic blown film extrusion simulator has been used to elucidate these interrelationships for all personnel.

Presenter: Kirk Cantor, Pennsylvania College of Technology
Kirk Cantor is a professor in Plastics and Polymer Engineering Technology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, where he has been since 1990. His BS is in aerospace engineering from University of Maryland and his MS and PhD are in Polymer Science from Pennsylvania State University. Kirk's primary areas of expertise are polymer extrusion and educational software for the plastics industry. He has written many articles and has developed several computer-based training programs, including "The Blown Film Extrusion Simulator."

An online presentation is a simple and easy way to view a live presentation from the comfort of your home or office.
