Spinning DNA helix

Resurrecting extinct species
Home > Environment

These ideas on the possible use of cloning to resurrect extinct species are based on the thoughts expressed by Professor Peter Temple-Smith in the Conservation Newsletter of the Zoological Parks & Gardens Board (Volume 1, Issue 2, November 1999) at:
http://www.zoo.org.au/conservation/News_Nov99_Directors_Discourse.htm.

The movie 'Jurassic Park' provided the fantasy. Dolly the sheep gave us the reality when, after over 200 attempts, a new individual was cloned using the nucleus of an udder cell. Since Dolly, mice and cattle have also been successfully cloned. No matter what your view, cloning is firmly on the agenda and in the public arena. But who decides that cloning should be permitted?
