Splicing of the human insulin
gene into bacterial
cells has been used to produce pure human insulin
for the treatment of diabetes.
It is possible for this technique to be used to make other human hormones
such as human growth hormone, the blood-clotting factor needed to
treat haemophilia,
and erythropoietin
used to treat anaemia.
Biotechnology can also be used to produce large amounts of other proteins
that are of benefit to humans and to produce new and much safer vaccines
than in the past. |
