2000 - 2003: The Age of (In)Security [December 12, 2003]
A San Jose Mercury News TV ad in the spring of 2001 summed up the era neatly: “A month ago, you were a 28-year-old millionaire.
Now you’re just 28.”

After silicon: Biocomputing at work [December 12, 2003]
The warm, fuzzy predictability of Moore’s Law -- which stipulates that the number of transistors on a chip doubles every two
years -- should hold true for another 15 or 20 years. At that point, chip makers looking to downsize transistors will hit
a wall. They’ll be churning out silicon using a 16-nanometer process (today’s state-of-the-art chips use a 90-nanometer process).
Scrunch things down much smaller and those skittering electrons will be unable to reliably register the 0s and 1s that binary
processes require. Semiconductor designers will respond by experimenting with new substances or by stringing together processors
in grids and other arrangements. But some breakthrough will be required to replace the dead end that is silicon.

Jtest promotes good Java hygiene [December 12, 2003]
Parasoft's Jtest is a combination static-code analysis tool and souped-up JUnit-style unit testing environment for Java. Its
primary raison d'etre is to eliminate bugs so you don't have to chase them down with a debugger. Its secondary use is as a
regression testing tool, and this mixture of testing capabilities makes a powerful alloy.

1996 - 1999: The Internet Era [December 12, 2003]
Blame it on Netscape. the company’s wildly successful IPO in August 1995 set the table for four years of Internet insanity.
Hundreds of high-tech offerings followed, fueling a topsy-turvy economy where tech companies were measured not by the money
they made but by how quickly they spent it, ushering in an era of CEOs on skateboards and foosball tables in conference rooms.

Fixing up the new Office [December 12, 2003]
I was slaving away in Honolulu a couple of months ago, sacrificing my quality of life to bring you the best quality in IT
product testing, so apparently I missed all the fanfare surrounding the official release of Office 2003. But there you have
it: Work before pleasure. What can I say? I’m dedicated.

Wording on software and IPR reflects tough battle [December 11, 2003]
GENEVA - The reality of the World Summit on the Information Society here in Geneva is not just about bringing computers and
Internet access to the poor. It's also about making money from selling hardware, software and services. That partly explains
the long and often heated debate over two particularly thorny issues: open software and intellectual property rights, or IPR.

A calm and peaceful IT datacenter [December 05, 2003]
As the year end approaches, the holiday season intensifies, nightfall seems to come just a short while after lunch, and things
appear to slow down just a little bit in IT. Sure, the IT show must go on as usual, but problems seem to become slightly less
urgent as employees sneak out early to go to holiday parties and do their holiday shopping. The weather outside might be frightful,
but the relative calm in the datacenter is certainly delightful. Assuming your IT operation is actually calmer this time of
year (sorry e-commerce guys and gals, you’re left out), how can you get the most out of this peaceful season?

The fight with enterprise systems [November 26, 2003]
I was riding in the car of a fellow CTO recently and talking about the flakiness of enterprise software and systems when his
cell phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID. As he answered the call, the universal expression of concern washed over his
face. One of his staffers was calling to utter the most ominous words in IT: The system is down.

Bringing outsourcing back in-house [November 21, 2003]
With the economy heating up a bit, many IT managers are probably wondering how they might adjust to an environment of increased
IT spending and necessary investments. Most IT managers became specialists in contraction (myself included), but should a
more expansive environment change our approach?

The road to SMS 2003 has been arduous, but the destination is worth a look [November 21, 2003]
After fits, starts, and yet a few restarts, Systems Management Server 2003 is finally available. We (my pack of consultants
and I) have been dinging around with SMS 2003 since the first beta, and it’s been quite an adventure. But the long road has
been worth the trouble.
